ST GREGORY’S finished the academic year celebrating athletic success after five pupils represented the school at Cheshire Championships level and above. Matthew Pontifex, aged 16, was sixth for Great Britain in 1500m at the FISEC Games in Tours, France, as well as competing in the Cheshire Championships. Ashley Kirsopp, aged 13, did so well in the county event that he competed above his age group in the 75m hurdles at the English Schools Championships, achieving a national standard time of 11.95secs. Patrick Iredale, aged 12, won the Year Seven 1500m race at the Cheshires, while Owen Haggerty, aged 15, was second in the 400m year 10 event and Lotte Buffel, aged 15, was third in the 300m. All except Lottie are members of Warrington Athletics Club and received further training at the school’s athletics society, which Owen and Matthew helped to run. School sports coordinator Rob Wilby said: “They’re a real product of hard work and reaping the rewards.”
