Yr 3 & 4 County Gymnastics Final

Wednesday 15th June saw the first ever inter SSP (County) level Key Steps Gymnastics Final for boys and girls in Years 3 & 4. This county level competition followed on from the Warrington competitions, run by Laura Hogg, Gymnastics Development Officer from Warrington School Sport Partnership.

The event was attended by schools from 7 of the 8 SSPs across the county, with over 50 gymnasts performing a Vault and Floor routine in front of the judges from Sandbach Gymnastics Club and assisted by Gym Leaders from the Warrington Gymnastics academy, who all did a great job.

A big thank-you to Tracy Cooper and all her colleagues at Sandbach Gym club for co-ordinating proceedings, not forgetting Charlie and Ella from Sandbach Gym club for performing their wonderful bar routines to inspire the admiring Y3&4s.

Hopefully the Key Steps programme will now go from strength to strength as part of the new School Games from next academic year, particularly as all Warrington schools can now enter their Key Steps results onto the WaSSP website as part of a virtual competition (contact Laura Hogg lbaines@lymmhs.co.uk, or Paula Pearson pearsonp@wb.warr.ac.uk for more information).

4th: St Mary’s (C&N) 57.6;

5th: Gorse Covert (W’ton) 56.8;

6th: Cledford (Sand) 53.6;

7th: Christ the King (Macc) 49.1.

Individual Medals:

Y3 Vault – Becky (Stretton St Matthews) 10.0

Grappenhall Hall joins Focus Gymnastics

Grappenhall Hall joins together with Focus Gymnastics, a local Gym club to improve in performance and knowledge for a group of talented boys.

A group of boys from Grappenhall Hall School have been working with a local Men’s Gymnastics Coach to improve in their talent for free running and the new discipline freestyle Gymnastics.

The Boys along with their teacher are attending the sessions, held at Focus Gym Club, for 10 weeks, thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund.

The boys, who all range from 11 to 16 years of age, show a real interest or talent for the sport. They attend the sessions once a week for a two hour block as part of their school day. Giving them the opportunity to work within a purpose built facility and with outside coach has really improved their overall behaviour and social skills. They have responded to the programme really well, with all the boys learning new skills including backward somersaults on the trampoline, back flips on the floor and they have also been introduced to the 6 pieces that all high level gymnasts have to take part in during competitions.

The boys have been given the opportunity to attend classes outside of the school; this will give them the opportunity to be part of a club setting and work towards club grades and competitions.

The Boys’ teacher Graham Chatterley describes how well the sessions are going; “It gives the boys the opportunity to push on from the starting point they have from school. They can use the specialist equipment and coaching to try things they have not been able to before. It also allows me as the teacher to learn new coaching techniques for skills the boys are asking for but I have not had the knowledge for.”

Carter selected for GB

A WARRINGTON gymnast and former Guardian Sports Pesonality of the Year Chris Carter finished in eighth place at the World Sport Acrobatic Championships in Wroclav, Poland, last week. Carter was representing Great Britain in the men’s four event, lying third on the first day behind the Great Britain number one team and the Chinese number one team. The second day saw them drop to fourth place after being given a time penalty and a disappointing third day saw them finish in eighth place. Carter has been selected, along with the Wakefield men’s four, to represent Great Britain at the European Team Championships in Reslauz, Poland in October.

New Gymnastics club in Warrington

A new gymnastics club opens at Broomfields Leisure Centre on Saturday 31st October. The classes offer children a range of exercises from body management, ballet, flexibility and body conditioning.
