WARRINGTON Wolves Foundation Handball team suffered a late defeat at the hands of Salford at Birchwood Leisure Centre.

The visitors breezed into an early lead as they proved to be the physically stronger side.

Wolves responded by clawing back three before half time and a resounding speech from captain Stuart Clarke proved to be the catalyst the side needed, spurring them into second half action.

They fought back after the break to score three unanswered goals to level the scores, which opened the game up into an end-to-end affair.

But Salford’s physicality shone through in the last 10 minutes, as they put themselves back in front with a late flurry of goals to leave the final score 30-24 to Salford.

Unfortunately for Wolves their young guns failed to improve on their senior counterpart’s scores, themselves falling to a four-goal defeat to Salford at Birchwood.

Warrington looked nervous in front of goal and only Bryn Edwards really impressed, scoring five excellent long-range efforts.

Salford were ultimately too strong and ran out 24-20 winners.

RAFIK Tahraoui is devoting himself to the Great Britain men’s handball team for the 2012 Olympics in London but needs help from his home town.

The 21-year-old, from Old Hall, is showing great determination to achieve his goals, with handball being the second sport in which he has achieved international level.

Tahraoui even managed to arrange to have his final university exams squashed into one week so that he could attend European Championships qualification preparation with the GB handball team in May.

Sadly, the former Great Britain under 21s water polo international broke his ankle in a training session prior to the qualification tournament but has since recovered and attended international training camps.

It is now the Salford Handball Club player’s intention to step up his game and compete with a top European league team to elevate his standards towards Olympic selection.

This is where he needs your help.

He said: “Throughout the years I have had many sporting awards and achievements, one being runner-up to Wayne Rooney in the Cheshire and Merseyside highest young achiever award, and the most recent being a finalist in the 2010 Warrington Sports Personality of the Year event.

“I have recently graduated from Salford University with a BSc (Hons) in applied sports science strength and conditioning.

“But I am now dedicating myself entirely towards 2012 as I have always aspired to become an Olympian.

“I would need to spend the short time before the Olympics playing at clubs in leagues around Europe where the standard is much higher than in the UK.

“As things stand at the moment, it will be difficult for me to find a team willing to offer me a paid contract.

“My coaches have several contacts with clubs, academies and coaches abroad, where opportunities are readily available, but would require funding in order to cover accommodation and living expenses.”

These expenses have been estimated at £500 a month and he is looking for this assistance from January to July 2011.

He said: “Due to the current lack of funding available for GB athletes in this sport, this financial assistance is crucial to my development as it is essential that I move abroad to play handball in order to guarantee my place in the 2012 Olympics team.

“I am aware that a large amount of money is required, which is why I am looking for either an individual or several sponsors to help cover these expenses and assist me in fulfilling my Olympic dream.”

If you can help or would like to discuss further, call Rafik Tahraoui on 07796 754497.

HOLLY Lam-Moores has signed for Danish Liga club Sonderjyske from SK Aarhus in a unprecendented move for a Warrington player.

“When they offered me Liga handball, of course my answer was yes,” said the Warrington 20-year-old.

“This is the perfect opportunity for me to gain experience in the top league this close to the Olympics.

“It will be extremely tough and means I will have to lower my expectations, but throwing myself in at the deep end could make me a better handball player.”

Back in Warrington, Wolves Foundation’s men’s handball team slipped to a disappointing 26-22 defeat to Manchester University.

After going behind in the early stages, Wolves had fought their way back into contention to make the scores 12-12 at half time.
