Lysander Community High School’s cheerleading squad had much to celebrate this week when they gained third place at the National Cheerleading Association’s annual competition in Telford. ‘Lysander Beez’ has only been established since September 2010 and this was their first major event. Since it started in response to requests from students, the squad has gone from strength to strength. Coach and PE teacher at Lysander, Rachel Taylor said ‘I am so proud of the girls’ achievement. They have been rewarded for the hard work they put in. Without exception, they gave up most of their Easter holiday to train and polish their routine, as well as every night after school. The training paid off when they came to perform at the sports arena, as they did it better than ever. Nerves didn’t affect them at all until awards time. The squad were sat together on the floor, along with other squads; it was so tense. Fourth place was read out and it wasn’t us, and then third was read out. The roar from the girls and the smile on their faces was fantastic to see. A special thanks should also go to Clare Haven, a student teacher from Liverpool John Moores University, who added her expertise in cheerleading in order to prepare the girls’.

The Warrington School Sport Partnership’s Sportshall Athletics Final was held at Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Centre (sports hall) on Wednesday 9th February 2011. This was a high energy, non stop event in which teams of Y5/6 pupils took part in a number of indoor track and field disciplines, individual and relay running events, jumping, throwing, balancing and speed bouncing.

The event was organised by Competition Manager, David Quartermain and the cluster schools involved were:
Cluster Participant Schools
Cardinal Newman St Peters
Penketh Penketh Community
Lysander Christchurch
Bridgewater Stockton Heath / St Matthews
Lymm Statham / Ravenbank
Great Sankey Barrow Hall
Woolston Bruche
Culcheth St Helens / Croft

Interest in Sportshall athletics has grown over the last few years, thanks to the repeated staging of the Y5/6 event. A year 7 / 8 event is also due to run, which will be useful for secondary schools looking to identify talented athletes in the run up to the summer season.

More details regarding the Warrington School Sport Partnership’s Sportshall Athletics Final is to follow shortly.
