4 pupils from year eleven at St. Gregory’s have been selected to represent Great Britain at the FISEC games in Portugal, 5th-11th July 2011.

Sam Houghton and Jack Cookson have been selected to represent the Great Britain football squad. Both players have since picked up professional contracts with Morecambe for next season.

Oliver Wells and Owen Haggerty have both been selected for the athletics team following their successes at the Cheshire County championships. Oliver, silver medalist in the Cheshire AA 200m, will be running the 200m in Portugal. Owen had double succes at the Cheshire AA championships, winning silver in the 800m and gold in the 400m. He will represent GB in the 800m in Portugal.

FISEC was estabished in 1948 and is a professional organisation that organizes sports games every year for young people from its member countries. Through national schoolsport federations of its member countries FISEC reaches young people from within Catholic schools from all over the world. Although the FISEC Games are not a goal in themselves for our participants, they may well be an objective, which creates the opportunity for young people to experience sport at a high level within the context of school.

FISEC wants to offer more than just competition. In its activities the organization aims at stimulating sports by professional sports educators, within a well-defined pedagogical framework, including human values, fair play, social and cultural aspects. Apart from the professional set-up of the sports events FISEC aims at including in its Games the added value of cultural exchange and human interest.

Well done boys, and best of luck in Portugal!

THE second round of Warrington Athletics Club’s Schools Cross Country League took place at Walton Hall Gardens on Saturday, with the competition set to be completed on December 11.

In the year 10 and 11 races, Sophie Bates (Lymm) and Jack Gleave (William Beamont) took the top spots, with Sophie’s run being one of the day’s biggest wins as she defeated her rivals by more than two minutes.

Emma Scott (Helsby) and Rebecca Coy (Bridgewater) took second and third in the girls’ race, with Chris Smith (Boteler) and Henry Buttress (Lymm) claiming the berths in the boys’ race and St Gregorys taking the team award.

Years eight and nine saw Jemma Eyre (Lymm) and Leighton Sharman (Birchwood) run out the winners as Kate Merrill and M McEverley (both Helsby) came second and third, as did Patrick Iredale (St Gregorys) and T Sljivie (Helsby).

Wins for Amy Renton (Helsby) and Kiro Smithyman-Harding (Bridgewater) in the year seven category meant that Helsby pipped Bridgewater to the team title, as Olivia Bush and Annabel Martin (both Bridgewater) and Billy Young and Oliver Upton (both Helsby) claimed the runners up positions.

The young winners from the last round were at it again in the primary school races, with Lauren Goddard (St Monica’s) repeating her win and Jack Evans, Benji Mullarkey and Daniel Fox (all St Wilfrids) again filling the first three boys’ places.

Matthew Pontifex, aged 16, was sixth for Great Britain in 1500m at the FISEC Games in Tours, France, as well as competing in the Cheshire Championships. Ashley Kirsopp, aged 13, did so well in the county event that he competed above his age group in the 75m hurdles at the English Schools Championships, achieving a national standard time of 11.95secs. Patrick Iredale, aged 12, won the Year Seven 1500m race at the Cheshires, while Owen Haggerty, aged 15, was second in the 400m year 10 event and Lotte Buffel, aged 15, was third in the 300m.
