Sainbury’s Paralympic Sport

Sainsbury’s is an official partner of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and wants to help 1 million school children try a Paralympic sport.

To get you started, they are offering a free sports kit to those schools who register on line. The kit will arrive in Sept 11 and will give you the chance to play some of the following Paralympic sports: Goalball, Sitting Volleyball and Blind Football.

New Government Website – Your School Games

Today sees the launch of the government’s new website; Your School Games! In the run up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, log onto their website for more information on how to register your school and so creating a year round calendar of competitions for all your students.

The School Games will officially start in September 2011, where a number of competitive sports will involve young children from year 3 to 13 taking part.

It will consist of 4 levels:

Intra school competitions
Regular local interschool competitions
Annual area/county multi sports school games festivals
National multi sport events.

Mini Olympics

In the summer term, the sports students from Warrington Collegiate designed and ran a mini Olympics event for year 5 and 6 from St Ann’s Primary school in Warrington. The students adapted various Olympic and Paralympic sports to suit the need of all the children that where attending.

Some examples of the game the students delivered were, bench ball, quick cricket and kick rounders.

The overall message that the students from Warrington Collegiate where trying to get across to the students of St Ann’s where: the Olympic Values of: friendship, excellence and respect, also the Paralympic Values of: inspiration, determination, courage and equality.

The aim of the mini Olympics was to use the London 2012 Games to inspire learners of all ages to get them involved in a values-based project.

All the students highly enjoyed the session and there was a link formed between Warrington Collegiate and St Ann’s Primary School in which we will be using again in the future for the Winter Olympics event planned in the Winter term of 2010.

Olympic Volunteers

We have been able to register volunteers for the Olympic volunteering programme.

In total we have got over 50 students to complete the online application form to become Olympic volunteers.

Charity Rowing Event

On a Wednesday afternoon in October the Leadership academy of Warrington Collegiate set up and ran a charity rowing event in partnership with National College’s week.

The charity the students where raising money for was Help The Hero’s and managed to raise over substantial amount in the space of three hours.

While the leadership academy members where asking both students and staff to take part, the main underlying message was to promote the Olympic and Paralympic values of: Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality.

All in all the event was a success and the students of the college and Leadership academy gain valuable experience of volunteering for events and promoting the Olympic and Paralympics values.
