Launched in September 2005, the National Competition Framework for young people sets out the following vision:

  • To develop a world-class system of competitive sport for young people
  • To transform the content, structure and presentation of competitive opportunities for young people of school age
  • To heighten the profile of school sport and, specifically, competitive opportunities

Work is already underway to develop a single competitive framework for each sport that includes competitions in schools and clubs. The challenge is to deliver high quality pathways which will leave a lasting legacy up to and beyond the 2012 Olympics. A national team of Competition Managers has been created to work towards the vision on a local level.

In Warrington our Competition Manager is Dave Quartermain. Dave produces our primary and secondary competition calendars and works to ensure that the competitions we run are high quality, sustainable and link in with clubs, coaching and volunteering.

Being involved in a positive competitive or performance experience, at whatever level, can be hugely affecting for all young people. our competition structure starts off in KS1, with fun based multi-skill events and virtual multi-skill challenges. In lower key stage 2 the frequency and level of challenge increase, and by UKS2 as well as a range of fun, participation based festivals, there are several sport specific events which lead to county and sometimes national opportunities. In KS3, 4 and 5 we are beginning to develop more opportunities for pupils who may not get the chance to represent their school in the higher level competitions available, with a view to increasing interest and participation in physical activity in later life. We are also developing links with talent identification and support schemes to ensure that pupils can make progress in their chosen sport, but also maintain a balance in their social, home and working lives. Competitive opportunities are also planned for young people with disabilities and special needs. We are also working to ensure that the competitive opportunities we provide are as inclusive as possible.

To find out about some of the recent activity which has been going on in Warrington, simply type competition into the search box above. You can also find information about forthcoming competition on our Partnership Calendar – simply ensure that ‘Primary Competition’ or ‘Secondary Competition’ are checked in the drop down list on the right.

Concept2 Rowing Challenge Series

Concept2 Rowing Challenge Series

Online Events
The Challenge Series http://www.concept2.co.uk/challengeseries/ is a participation-driven league series with a different challenge each month between September and March and prizes along the way to incentivise participation as well as reward the top performers. The current challenge is a 10,000m row.
The Schools League http://www.concept2.co.uk/league/ is similar to the Challenge Series but is specifically for school pupils to race in teams rather than individually. We are currently in the 4th of 6 rounds but with the mini-leagues it means that even if you haven’t entered the first three rounds there is no reason not to start competing now.

Non-Competitive
If competition is not your thing then we also have the Distance Award Scheme. This simply involves keeping a record of every metre you row on a Concept2 Indoor Rower and letting us know when you reach one of the target distances. There are two levels for the DAS, the youth scheme has distances starting at 25,000m and the first senior target is 1,000,000m. The beauty of the DAS is that there is no time limit – you row at your own pace. For more information please visit the Distance Award Scheme http://www.concept2.co.uk/motivation/distance_award_scheme page.
