Since funding for the Competition Organiser’s team finished in March 2011, we have been working on how to make the transition to the School Games system devised by the coalition government. School Games Organisers have now been appointed, along with an Inclusion Officer for School Sport. These 3 staff will help schools and Secondary School Teacher Release staff to interpret and implement this strategy. Initially, schools need to register their interested to take part at www.yourschoolgames.com . Further information about the sports and the formats involved will then be sent direct to registered schools.
Although this is a time of transition for Warrington School Sport Partnership, competition will remain a key aspect of our work. Primary and secondary competition calendars will be produced for 2011-12 and we will continue to ensure that the competitions we run are high quality, sustainable and link in with clubs, coaching and volunteering.
Being involved in a positive competitive or performance experience, at whatever level, can be hugely affecting for all young people.
Although we will be working to the new School Games strategy, there are many other competitive opportunities available to schools. At KS1 pupils take part in fun based multi-skill events challenges. In lower key stage 2 the frequency and level of challenge increase, and by UKS2, as well as a range of fun, participation based festivals and competitive opportunities (such as Planet Sport events), there are several sport specific competitions which lead to county and sometimes national opportunities. In KS3, 4 and 5 as well as regular leagues and sport specific competitions, we provide opportunities for pupils who may not usually get the chance to represent their school in higher level competition, with a view to increasing their interest in sport and their participation in physical activity in later life (such as Sport Xtra). Competitive opportunities are also planned for young people with disabilities and special needs (such as Total Sport and our EBD events). Where it is not possible to take pupils off site, we provide or signpost to a range of Virtual Competition challenges (Mini Superstars, Skipping, Virtual Multiskills, Concept 2, the Fitter Schools Challenge).
