Get Qualified NW is a funded programme helping individuals gain qualifications across the Sport, Outdoors and Health & Fitness sectors. It is a fantastic opportunity to receive real financial support for your training. This programme is also open for employers who have a group of staff who would benefit from upskilling.

Start and End dates: November 2009 to June 2011 (certification by June 2011)

To explore the 5 abilities framework to identify gifted and talented pupils
To gain an understanding of junior athlete education and other strategies, which can be used to support such pupils
To explore the classroom quality standards in relation to gifted and talented pupils in PE

Anne Craddock – Youth Support trust trainer with specialism in working with young people and special needs

Target audience:
Teachers, staff, volunteers, carers, coaches working with young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties

The objectives/learning outcomes for this course will be:

The Elements course has been developed, and is delivered, by those working with young disabled pupils with profound and complex needs. It is designed to provide practical ideas and strategies around physical activities for staff working with young people who have profound and complex needs. This 2 x day course will cover all 4 Elements courses based around Earth (games based activities), Water (water-based activities), Air (outdoor adventure) and Fire (dance and movement). Fire and Air will take place on 16 March and Earth and Water will take place on 17 March.

Delegates can choose to attend both days and cover all 4 courses or one of the days. Please contact CPD if you have different requirements

Course content:

Earth – games based activities
Sensory environment encouraging individual reaction and movement
Supported interaction developing basic skills
Group settings to promote participation, anticipation and interaction

Water – water-based activities
Promoting confidence and relaxation
Achieving stillness and balance
Stimulating movement and independence

Air – outdoor adventure
Preparation of students and staff
Specific equipment considerations
Supporting and Encouraging

Fire – dance and movement
Using movement, sound and vibration to direct big movements
Assisted and directed movement
Self-expression and independent movement

The course also covers information on, manual handling, risk assessment and considerations when organising activities for young disabled people with profound multiple impairments.

CLOTHING:
On 16th March:

  • am = Practical /sports wear
  • pm = waterproofs, boots, warm clothing, drink

On 17th March:

  • am = Practical/sports wear
  • pm = swimwear and towel, spare t-shirt
