The GB Women’s handball team visited Birchwood High School recently, and invited people from across the School Sport Partnership to visit them as they trained for the final time before their European qualifier against Finland, at the Echo Arena in Liverpool – which they eventually won 24-23 (Click here to see a BBC report about their visit and the match itself).
The girls, although tired from travelling and training, spent some time working with pupils and demonstrating how to play the game.
Holly Lam-Moores (19), one of the team, spoke to the group about how she got involved in sport and encouraged other girls to follow her lead and get involved with physical activity. She explained how physical activity is a great stress reliever and how she has had so many exciting experiences thanks to her love of sport.
Rugby League and Handball also unusually came together at the event, as the Challenge Cup was brought out for a rare viewing. Warrington Wolves are working in partnership with Warrington School Sport Partnership to establish a handball academy in the town. We expect to see more rising stars as a result of this partnership and thanks to the efforts of SSCo and Handball Development Officer, Mick Hegarty, and coach Gary Kelsall.
