What is it?
A series of identifying higher ability days held throughout the academic year for youngsters across Warrington linked to the Playground to Podium* initiative.
Who is it for?
Young disabled pupils in mainstream schools and further education establishments aged between 7 and 18 years old.
The Youth Sport Trust have produced a series of resource cards including images and descriptions of young people and a detailed assessment criteria which can be utilised within the curriculum. WaSSP will also be organising courses for teachers in mainstream schools to develop their skills in identifying and supporting ability in young people.
What exit routes are available following the Identifying Higher Ability days?
- Two new weekly term time Multi Sport clubs (for pupils aged between 11-18 years old) and two new Multi-Skill clubs (for pupils aged between 7-11 years old) will be established.
- Following the initiation of the Multi-Sport and Multi-Skill clubs at the school, those individuals that have been identified as having sporting potential will be referred to County Athlete Assessment & Development Centres (CAADCs), which will be held once per academic year within Cheshire.
What is a CAADC?
- A 1 day event providing an opportunity for representatives from the participating National Governing Bodies (currently Athletics, Boccia, Football, Table Tennis, Swimming and Wheelchair basketball) to assess the potential of each athlete to progress along each sport’s Paralympic pathway.
* Playground to Podium is a dedicated national initiative designed to identify and nurture disabled young people with the potential to be elite athletes and performers within their chosen sport.
